Why some of us dont have one true calling.

What do you want to be when you grow up? Well, if you're not sure you want to do just one thing for the rest of your life, you're not alone. In this illuminating talk, writer and artist Emilie Wapnick describes the kind of people she calls "multipotentialites" — who have a range of interests and jobs over one lifetime. Are you one?

I can see how this subject might be something that some might see as an Earth-shaking idea, but this is a concept that's been around since the Renaissance starting with Leonardo da Vinci who set the mold for what would be called a Renaissance Man. Da Vinci proved himself to be a skilled painter, scientist, engineer and mathematician. Although the term alludes to the idea that only men can be proficient in multiple areas, it was created at a time when women were not seen as capable as men.

Obviously time has proven that women can be just as capable. Today the term has been watered down and essentially means a very clever person who is good at many different things. Look, if you're good at something and enjoy doing it, find out if it’s something you can make a living doing. Along the way, as you develop other interest, you’ll pick up hobbies. Once you’ve got a hobby, you’ll find out over time if you can make a living at doing that.

Then you can choose to supplement the career you already have or develop that hobby into a fallback career or as a secondary career if you find yourself suffering from burnout.
